National Missing Persons Week 2011
When someone goes missing in Australia, on average at least 12 other people are directly affected including family, friends and work colleagues.
This is the message that the AFP, along with state and territory police forces, has been promoting to the public during National Missing Persons Week (NMPW) 2011.
The aim of the week is to raise awareness of the issues and impacts surrounding missing persons, and this year's theme was "When someone goes missing, more than one person is lost".
This year's NMPW launch was co-hosted with the Queensland Police Service at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
Deputy Commissioner Close Operations Support Mike Phelan spoke of the "ripple effect" of just one person going missing.
"Unless you have experienced a loved one going missing, it is hard to understand the impact on those who are left behind", he said.
"The impact on families, friends and colleagues, and on the missing people themselves, can be both profound and multi-faceted".
Missing Persons Units from State and Territory law enforcement around Australia provided profiles to the National Missing Persons Coordination Centre for distributing to media outlets, gaining valuable publicity for these cases as well as for NMPW.
As part of the marketing campaign, second year graphic design students from the Canberra Institute of Technology were invited to design concepts that reflected the impact of missing persons on society.
The winning entry was that of Ian Radosavljevic, whose design featured a man's face made up of words synonymous with someone going missing, such as brother, mum, friend, lost, why and gone.
Mr Radosavljevic not only had his design used in national television and print advertisements, but also received a perpetual trophy and a framed copy of his final design from National Manager High Tech Crime Operations Neil Gaughan.
