35,000 people are reported missing each year in Australia. That is equivalent to one person every 15 minutes (Missing Persons in Australia 2008). 95 percent of missing persons are found within a short period of time (usually within a week).
Recent research has indicated that young people, the aged and those living with a mental illness are particularly at risk of going missing.
The reasons why people go missing are varied and include escape from family conflict or domestic violence, misadventure, rebellion, abduction, homicide, suicide, drugs or alcohol abuse, dementia or depression and schizophrenia.
The NMPCC is funded by the Australian Government through the Australian Federal Police and aims to reduce the incidence and impact of missing persons in Australia.
