35,000 people are reported missing each year in Australia - one person every 15 minutes (Missing Persons in Australia 2008). 95 percent of missing persons are found within a short period of time (usually within a week) however the are currently 1,600 long-term missing persons (people who have been missing for more than six months).

The National Missing Persons Coordination Centre (NMPCC) will be coordinating the offical launch of  National Missing Persons Week which is scheduled for Monday 2 August. The launch aims to raise awareness of significant issues associated with missing persons. The focus for 2010 is on dispelling the myth that you have to wait 24 hours to report someone missing. The tagline for the 2010 campaign is - 'when someone goes missing, a day spent waiting is a day lost'.

The NMPCC is funded by the Australian Government through the Australian Federal Police and aims to reduce the incidence and impact of missing persons in Australia.
