About us

The NMPCC is funded by the Australian Federal Police through the Australian Government. The NMPCC was established based on the need for a strong leadership and national coordination role, to complement the operational and investigative roles of the State and Territory Police Missing Persons Units.

Australian Government funding provides capacity for a comprehensive and coordinated approach to the response to missing persons.

Our mission

The NMPCC's mission is to reduce the incidence and impact of missing persons and to educate the Australian community about this significant issue.

Our policy

A National Missing Persons Policy was endorsed by the Commonwealth and State Police Ministers in June 2006. The policy developed the PLEASE principles of Prevention, Location, Education, Awareness, Support and Evaluation which provide a framework for the NMPCC to work and direct a range of initiatives to:

  • reduce the incidence of missing person's reports
  • raise awareness within the broader community
  • educate and train service providers to respond more effectively to missing persons
  • support those families and friends affected by the disappearance of a family member or friend.

In its work the NMPCC:

  • recognises and protects the dignity, confidentiality and privacy of missing persons, victims and others involved
  • asserts the importance to family and friends of locating missing persons and the significance of community issue
  • maintains its integrity by working closely with individuals and agencies who are working in the community interest on a not-for-profit basis
  • responds equally in all cases without prejudice or discrimination
  • works in consultation and partnerships with the Australian police, other agencies and the community to deliver the best possible service
  • recognises and respects the ownership and confidentiality of information provided by the police and other agencies.

The NMPCC also produces a quarterly eBulletin titled Missing to communicate new initiatives and developments across the missing persons sector. Recipients include search agencies, families and friends of missing persons, service providers and researchers.
