Australians missing overseas

Where there are concerns for an Australian citizen’s whereabouts overseas some initial enquiries can be undertaken.

  1. Contact can be established with family, friends and travelling companions to ascertain if others may have heard from or had contact with the missing person.
  2. Contact can be made with the missing person’s last known address or employer to seek information about their possible movements.

If after making initial enquiries the missing person is not located and there are serious concerns for their safety and welfare, contact can be made with either local police or the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

Local police

A missing person's report can filed with local State or Territory police. This report is then lodged to Interpol to facilitate international cooperation in investigating the whereabouts of the missing person.

Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

DFAT will ensure contact is made with Australian diplomatic missions overseas. Consular staff will then begin enquiries with local authorities, including the local police.

Contact the Consular Emergency Centre in Australia on 1300 555 135 (for the cost of a local call) or from anywhere in the world on +61 2 6261 3055, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
